Other names: first-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst, dichloro(o-isopropoxyphenylmethylene)(tricyclohexylphosphine)ruthenium(II)
The first-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst is a ruthenium-based complex that enhanced olefin metathesis by incorporating a chelating benzylidene ligand, improving stability and catalyst turnover. Its structure features a ruthenium center coordinated to a benzylidene ligand with an o-isopropoxyphenyl substituent, a tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) ligand, and two chloride ligands. This modification slows catalyst decomposition while maintaining high reactivity. In its pure form, Hoveyda-Grubbs Gen1 appears as a ruddy brown crystalline powder.
